A good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor s book (Irish Proverb). However, getting to sleep is sometimes the problem. With all our pressures, problems and pains of everyday living, it is no wonder that millions suffer from sleep disorders. According to a national survey, 54% of adults said they have experienced insomnia at one time or another. Additionally, back pain, neck stiffness, muscle injuries and menopause can add to sleeplessness.

Today, pillows are not just something fluffy to place beneath our head at night. They are chiropractor approved, sleep doctor designed and specifically created to assist in pain relief, snoring cessation, spinal alignment, neck support, headache relief, joint strain pain, arthritis relief, sleep apnea and much more, while accommodating and stabilizing injuries and conditions. The basic sleeping pillow filled with foam or feathers is a thing of the past.

The fillings for pillows have also changed. Feathers and foam are still available, but new materials have been introduced such as buckwheat hulls, mustard seeds, memory foam and new types of fiber. Added to that are pillows filled with air and/or water and magnetic therapy pillows. These different surfaces provide different types and levels of support for the body and can, over time, heal and correct certain conditions such as degenerative discs, sleep apnea, snoring, insomnia, etc.

How often have you had to punch your pillow into a shape that supports your neck and is comfortable for sleeping? Most of us have had to do this at one time or another. Now, pillows are available in a variety of sizes and shapes. Listed below are a few specific pillows designed to aid sleep:

• Econo Wave Pillow: this pillow has a wavy surface to allow air to circulate while soothing and supporting the neck.

• Buckwheat Hull or Mustard Seed Pillows: these pillows can conform to any shape, come in a multitude of sizes, provide air circulation, help reduce stiff neck and insomnia and come in a variety of scents. Mustard seeds are also believed to relieve backache, joint pain, muscle aches, rheumatism or migraine headaches, while buckwheat hulls provide support and cooling of the head and neck and can help reduce stiff neck and insomnia.

• Air Core Adjustable Pillow: a cervical fiber pillow with a trapezoid shaped center that adjusts the level of support using an air pump and can reduce snoring by correcting blocked airways.

• AquaCore 3 in 1 Pillow: This pillow consists of fiber, resilient foam, plus and easy, fill to your level water cushion that addresses the cause of pain and restores proper neck curvature.

• Leg Spacer: This specialty pillow helps relieve pressure and strain on the lower back, knees and ankles and helps relax muscles while sleeping by placing the pillow between your knees.

• Headache Ice Pillo: This pillow uses medically recommended cold therapy in treating dull, moderate and severe tension or migraine headaches.

• Dreamzz Magnetic Sleeping Pillow: Get a great sleep and wake up refreshed while sleeping on this pillow that produces a calming therapeutic magnetic field that soothes away tension and stress while sleeping.

Pillows are also available for neck support, back support and headache relief:

• The Magnetic Lumbar Pillow is a half roll foam pillow that relieves pain due to muscle strains, sprains, sciatica and herniated discs by delivering a deep penetrating bio north magnetic field.

• The Jackson Roll is a versatile fiber filled support pillow that provides comfort and support for muscle and joint pain, as well as adding curvature to your spine. (I can personally attest that this works to help relieve the pain of degenerative discs.)

• The Soothe A Ciser foam pillow helps relieve headaches and neck pain.

These are just a few of the pillows offered on the market today, along with many others that address specific conditions or injuries. The response of the public to these specialty pillows has been tremendous and will grow in popularity as sleep conditions, sleep disorders and aches and pains multiply. Also, these pillows provide a noninvasive method of relieving and perhaps eliminating pain without medication or surgery.

During normal breathing, air passes through the throat on its way to the lungs. The air travels past the soft palate, uvula, tonsils, and tongue. When a person is awake, the muscles in the back of the throat tighten to hold these structures in place preventing them from collapsing and/or vibrating in the airway. During sleep, the uvula and soft palate frequently vibrate causing the distinctive sounds of snoring.

The LAUP procedure is a laser surgical procedure designed to sequentially trim and shorten these structures, thus preventing or reducing snoring.

Risks and ComplicationsYou have the right to be informed that the surgery may involve risks of unsuccessful results, complications, or injury from both known and unforeseen causes. Because individuals vary in their tissue circulation and healing processes, as well as anesthetic reactions, ultimately there can be no guarantee made as to the results or potential complications. The following complications have been reported in the medical literature. This list is not meant to be inclusive of every possible complication. They are listed here for your information only, not to frighten you, but to make you aware and more knowledgeable concerning this surgical procedure.

1. Failure to resolve the snoring. Most surgeons feel that about 85% of patients who undergo a LAUP will have a significant or complete resolution in their snoring; and an additional percentage of patients will notice reduced levels of snoring such that their sleep partners will report that it’s level is no longer offensive.

2. Failure to cure sleep apnea or other pathological sleep disorders. Pathological sleep disorders, like sleep apnea, are medical problems which may have associated serious complications. At this time, the LAUP procedure has not been proven to cure these disorders.

3. Bleeding. In very rare situations, a need for blood products or a blood transfusion. You have the right, should you choose, to have autologous or designated donor directed blood pre-arranged. You are encouraged to consult with your doctor if you are interested.

4. Nasal regurgitation, a change in voice, or velopharyngeal insufficiency when liquids may flow into the nasal cavity during swallowing (rare).

5. Failure to resolve coexisting sinus, tonsil, or nasal problems.

6. Need for revision, or further and more aggressive surgery.

7. Prolonged pain, impaired healing, and the need for hospitalization

For more information visit: http://www.melatrol.com/?aid=847674

In general, surgery for sleep apnea is only about 50% successful. However, you would need to talk with your surgeon regarding your specific situation. Surgery is usually recommended only after medical therapy has failed. If your main concern is the snoring, then either the laser procedure or the new Somnoplasty carries about an 85% success rate for resolution of the snoring.

Your problems can be evaluated by an Ears, Nose, Throad (ENTor otolaryngologist) doctor–if you are having sleep problems associated with significantly enlarged adenoids and a very relaxed palate then various surgical operations may be necessary to review. The problem is not one of too little oxygen, but rather may be related to anatomical issues (how his air passages are designed). Speak with your doctor about this. Many times it is helpful to make a video tape for either his doctor or the ENT doctor to see–a picture and sound is worth a thousand words.

Sleep Disorders – What’s keeping you up at night?

It’s not just the economy that keeps many of us wide-awake in the dark – although it certainly doesn’t help!

Sleep disorders are becoming more and more common in todays’ ‘hurry-hurry, busy-busy’ world. With so much to do, and so little time, sleep is starting to be seen as a luxury rather than a necessity. But your body disagrees wholeheartedly.

Sleep is absolutely necessary to your physical and emotional health, and when we don’t pay attention to our bodys’ need for our full 8 hours of sleep, there’s a price to pay.

INSOMNIA

A dictionary definition of insomnia is… ‘a prolonged and usually abnormal inability to obtain adequate sleep’. This could mean you have difficulty falling asleep, or staying asleep. You may climb into bed and then lie awake until 1am staring at the ceiling. Or maybe you fall asleep right away, but wake up at 1am….and again at 2am…. and again at 3:30am… you get the picture. You may even fall asleep, stay that way for a few hours and then wake at 4am and stay that way until your alarm clock goes off.

All these scenarios can be covered by the term ‘insomnia’, and this sleep disorder can have physical or emotional causes. When we’re stressed to the max, or going through an emotional upheaval, it can interfere with our sleep patterns. Many cases of insomnia fall under the ‘Transient Insomnia’ heading, and can last for just a couple of nights, to one week. ‘Short-term Insomnia’ covers sleep disturbances lasting anywhere between one week and one month, while ‘Chronic Insomnia’ can go on indefinitely.

And it’s not just adults that suffer from insomnia, increasing numbers of teenagers and younger children are also finding sleep difficult to come by. There are many approaches to treating insomnia, these include :

Improving your sleep hygiene and setting up a regular bedtime routine/sleep schedule

Paying close attention to your diet – certain drinks/foods/activities can make it more difficult to sleep well. It’s also been found that other foods/drinks can increase your chances of getting a good nights’ sleep

Reducing stress and anxiety levels with alternative remedies such as relaxation or hypnotherapy techniques, aromatherapy and more

SLEEP APNEA

This sleep disorders’ name is derived from the Greek word ‘apnoia’, which simply translated, means ‘without breath’. And that describes it pretty well. Sleep apnea sufferers literally stop breathing multiple times during sleep, and they may or may not, be aware of it! Excessive snoring, accompanied by snorting/grunting/gasping sounds, is the prime symptom of this disorder, and is often most easily recognized by the sufferers’ sleeping partner or roommate. If you think you are getting a full nights’ sleep, but feel constantly exhausted, sleep apnea may be be the culprit.

There are serious health issues which can result from untreated sleep apnea, in addition to chronic daytime sleepiness, these may include often waking up with a sore/dry throat, recurrent/persistent heartburn, frequent waking during the night with the feeling that you’re gasping for breath, weight gain, high blood pressure, heart irregularities (such as palpitations or ‘pounding’) and more.

Luckily, sleep apnea is easily treated using CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure). Sufferers wear a mask attached to a machine that provides a constant flow of air into their lungs while asleep. This keeps the airways open and prevents the episodes of apnea.

RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME

Also known as RLS, this sleep disorders’ name is pretty self-explanatory. People with RLS experience an uncomfortable sensation in their legs (it can vary from person to person and has been described as a ‘crawling/prickling/cramping feeling (and other similar terms).

This feeling makes it extremely uncomfortable, even impossible, to keep your legs still…. hence the name! Although scientists and researchers still have a lot to learn about this disorder, there are certain conditions and activities that they believe cause (or contribute to) Restless Leg Syndrome, they include ;

Being overweight or obese

Having ADHD

Hormonal fluctuations – such as during pregnancy, or menopause

Certain illnesses including anemia, arthritis, diabetes and others

There are a few medications that are available to treat RLS, but for many people finding (and eliminating) the ‘trigger’ behind their restless legs, and/or using massage, relaxation or exercise techniques are very effective.

SNORING

Researchers estimate that about half of all the adults in the US snore, and about 50% of them do so chronically (on a regular basis). Quite a number of children and teens also experience this. Although snoring is sometimes thought of as a bit of a joke, it’s not funny to the sufferer and most definitely not amusing to his sleeping partner or room mate/s!

The most common causes of snoring are enlarged tonsils or adenoids, being overweight or obese, allergies and poor muscle tone in the throat due to smoking/alcohol/aging. There are also several others.

Figuring out what is causing you to snore is vital, and your doctor can help here. If your snoring is severe, or accompanied by gasping/snorting/coughing and so on, consider Sleep Apnea as a possibility.

There are all kinds of treatments for snoring, from losing weight or giving up alcohol, to dental appliances, minor surgery and more.

NARCOLEPSY

This sleep disorder is much less common than the ones mentioned above, but it is pretty disruptive and often scary for people who experience it.

It’s characterized by an overwhelming desire to sleep, and narcolepsy sufferers are at risk of falling asleep at any time whether they’re working, driving or participating in any other daily activity. This is obviously a dangerous situation.

Other symptoms of narcolepsy sometimes include sudden muscle weakness or sleep paralysis, and vivid hallucination-like dreams which occur just as they fall asleep or wake up. Although there isn’t a cure for narcolepsy just yet, there are various treatment options which are effective at controlling the symptoms so that sufferers can live their lives normally (and safely!).

Sleep is so important to the human body that you will actually die if you’re deprived of sleep indefinitely. Even on a less dramatic scale, it’s certainly very destructive to your health to go without adequate sleep on a regular basis.

If you are always exhausted, you’re emotions are volatile, your patience/temper is short, you seem to be extra ‘clumsy’ or are always having minor accidents, if you frequently feel drowsy when driving…………… or there are any other signs that you are not getting enough restful sleep, it’s very important to see your doctor.

He/she will be able to find out what is causing the problem and prescribe treatment, or even refer you to a sleep lab or sleep clinic for further evaluation.

Snoring Cure & How To Find It

Have you tried everything, but still cannot seem to find a snoring cure that actually works? Before deciding to undergo surgery, most physicians will recommend that you try every snoring cure possible before electing to undergo a surgical procedure. Many people believe surgery to be a quick cure but, in reality, there are a number snoring cures that may be worth consideration.

For an instant and comfortable snoring cure, many sufferers have turned to an anti-snoring device known as the Sleep Genie. Made by Odyssey Direct Solutions, this snoring cure device often works it magic during the first use. By supporting the jaw and helping the wearer’s mouth to remain closed through the night, the Sleep Genie prevents snoring. Have you ever tried snoring with your mouth closed? That’s right. It’s not an easy thing to do and, in fact, is virtually impossible.

Another excellent at-home snoring cure is to simply change your sleeping position. Sleep on your side instead of your back. In addition, try sleeping on two pillows instead of only one. Weight loss is a very effective snoring cure, but only if you are overweight or have been diagnosed with obesity. A well-balanced diet and exercise program, however, will improve your overall lifestyle. Allergy sufferers may find that they will breathe easier, and snore less, if they rid their home of airborne allergens. Cigarette smoke, dust and pet hair are among the allergens that should be removed from the home.

If you have tried every snoring cure possible, but are still coming up short on results, consider the possibility of sleep apnea. This disorder is present when the sufferer snores excessively, wakes up short of breath or gasping for air during the night. The reason is because, with sleep apnea, the sufferer stops breathing completely on multiple occasions while sleeping. The airways become totally blocked, which lends to the choking sensation. If left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to heart disease, a stroke or other medical condition.

This article is intended for informational purposes only. It should not be used as, or in place of, professional medical advice. Before beginning any treatment for snoring, please consult a doctor for a proper diagnosis and remedy.

Stop Snoring Exercise Can Help With Snoring Apnea

What causes sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is usually caused by a blocked and narrowed airways when your sleep, which is similar to what causes snoring. Main reason for a blockage is due to overtly relaxed muscles in your throat muscles and your tongue. Tissue masses that are built up over the course of the day at the back of your mouth will also involuntarily cause your airways to be blocked. If the anatomy of your mouth, like your tongue and your tonsils are larger compared to your opening of windpipe, you might also find yourself struggling to breathe irregularly when sleeping.

Another common reason for sleep apnea and snoring is overweight. Those extra tissues around your neck area will thicken the wall of your windpipe, and thus causing it to be harder to keep it open during sleep.

What is the implication of sleep apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea is defined by having breathing pauses throughout the night when you sleep, and this usually occur for more than once. You might not know it, but if you wake up feeling fatigue and tired, then these are the signs that you’re not well rested and unable to get to stage 4 REM sleep. If you have sleep apnea, your oxygen level might drop to dangerous low level and thus prompts your brain to interrupt your sleep – forcing you to tighten your airway muscles and opening your windpipe, to allow more oxygen to go through to improve breathing pattern.

This process is often represented with a loud snort or choke. Bear in mind that frequent drops in oxygen level will trigger stress hormones, these hormones are deadly as it increases your heart rate much like the feeling you go through when you’re under stress. Frequent increase in your heart rate puts you at risk for high blood pressure, heart attack or even stroke.

Although you should always immediately consult your doctor if you find yourself having sleep apnea, there are certain changes that you can try to see if it cures your snoring apnea.

Causes for snoring and snoring apnea can be consider somewhat similar. There are certain exercises that aim to tackle directly with this root cause. These exercise known as stop snoring exercises focus on strengthening all your muscles in your mouth area. Your jaw, tongue and tonsils can be strengthened when you sleep, so that it doesn’t hinder your normal breathing pattern.

These exercises also help increase your air intake during sleep by applying breathing techniques that singers use to warm up their throat. Other factor such as overly wide and fat necks cause you to literally struggle with breathing at night. By losing weight through regular and consistent exercise, and paying attention to your food intake can help with reducing your fatiness around the neck. Supressants such as alcohol, cigarettes are known to relax your muscles. Therefore avoid taking any of these, and better still give them up completely for better life style.

We spent one third of our life sleeping – an activity seemingly to be useless. But we need sleep as much as we need oxgen and food. Sleep is important to us : it increases one’s work efficiency, extends one’s lifespan, cures illnesses. One should not deprive him/herself of sleep.

But during our lives, we will experience some sleepless nights which are considered normal. But for some people, poor quality sleep is a recurring or even a lifelong problem.

When your sleep quality is affected, the end results could well be feelings of fatigue during the day, irritability, poor memory, loss of productivity and loss of interest in family and social life.

Thus, focusing on improving your sleep quality is very important to your health. The quality of sleep is associated with number of sleeping hours. Doctors normally recommend that adults should need 7 to 10 hours of sleep daily and children would require more hours. But it varies among individuals. What matters is, for the duration you sleep, are you achieving the right quality of sleep?

Insomnia, or the inability to sleep well, is a common problem which could affect anyone at one time or another. A person with insomnia may have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, wake up frequently during the night, or wake up earlier than desired the next morning.

There are two kinds of insomnia, acute insomnia and chronic insomnia.

Acute insomnia, which can last from one night up to several weeks, may be caused by:

1. A single stressful event

2. A period of emotional stress

3. Illness

4. Temporary pain or discomfort

5. Disturbances in the sleeping environment such as noise, light or sleeping in a different bed

6. A change in the normal sleep pattern, caused by jet lag or working in a late shift

This kind of insomnia usually doesn’t last long once the root cause(s) is resolved. But be extra careful as insufficient sleep could cloud your judgement, leading to accidents while driving or at work.

Chronic insomnia is more serious as it can last for months or even years. The likely causes are:

1. Existing mental health situations eg. depression, anxiety or stress.

2. Poor sleep habits, such as watching television programmes in bed or going to bed at different times.

3. Excessive consumption of caffeine or nicotine laden items like coffee, tea or cigarettes.

4. Excessive drinking

5. Lack of regular exercise

6. Existing medical health problems such as breathing or heart problems, hormonal or digestive disorder, or chronic pain

7. Side effects of certain drugs

8. A different sleep disorder such as sleep apnea.

Before we go on, a little more explanation is required here for sleep apnea. It is a condition whereby a person regularly stops breathing, or has slowed breathing during sleep for 10 seconds or longer. Depending on the frequency the breathing stops (apnea) or slows (hypopnea), we classify the condition as mild, moderate or severe.

A person suffering from sleep apnea may snore loudly, and have restless sleep with difficulty breathing. As a result, he may wake up with a headache and tiredness which last the whole day. But, you can cure sleep apnea by adjusting your sleeping habits. Sometimes, doctors may suggest use of devices to help easier breathing during sleep or even surgery.

Insomnia can be cured as long as the victim develops a regular sleeping habit.

Here are some remedies to help you ease or eliminate your sleeping disorder:

1. Reserve your bedroom for sleeping and sex only i.e. avoid eating, working, computers, TV, video or loud music in the bedroom

2. Create a clean and comfy environment for sleeping

Sleeping Disorders: Open your Eyes and Solve it

Sleeping disorders are one of those severely dangerous yet highly underestimated health problems. Statistics express that about fifty million Americans develop one type of sleeping illness or another, and majority of those sick are not doing something about it. Sleep disorders cause sleep deprivation, and sleep deprivation causes stress as well as physical, or mental health problems. Many of the most common sleep problems are insomnia, sleep apnea, and hypersomnia.

Insomnia is the most typical; this occurs to almost anyone at a single point in our lives. It can be transient (temporary), intermittent (recurrent), as well as chronic (long-term). It’s the incapability to begin and/or maintain sleep during sleeping hours. It may be caused by few factors such as emotional, lifestyle, as well as environmental, or it can also be because of an underlying disease method.

Suggestions to cure insomnia include change in lifestyle attitude like smoking, drinking alcohol, and excessive eating a few hours before bedtime, and practicing good sleeping habits among others. A number of insomnia sufferers utilize the use of sleeping aids, sometimes without a prescription, in spite of learning the harmful side effects of sleeping pills when it’s used excessively as well as incorrectly.

Sleep apnea is a lot more typical than we believe. So what is sleep apnea? It’s a sleeping problem characterized by snoring. Snoring is the sound made by air going through an obstructed airway. Besides snoring, symptoms of sleep apnea are brief episodes of breathing stopping during sleep, lack of focus, memory loss, touchiness, and other signs of lack of sleep. This frequently goes undiagnosed, normally dismissing snoring as typical, and attributing the symptoms of sleep deprivation on another.

The efficiency of sleep apnea treatments depends on the kind of apnea diagnosed. It could be blockage, in which case surgical repair as well as taking away of what is causing the blockage is most effective; and central sleep apnea wherein there is a problem of coordination between the breathing area of the brain as well as the muscles of the respiratory, which is best treated with CPAP therapy utilizing a CPAP equipment, CPAP masks or known as nasal pillows, and a very vital tool, CPAP humidifiers.

Idiopathic hypersomnia, commonly referred to as excessive daytime sleepiness, is caused by a variety of factors. It’s often brought about by another sleeping sickness such as insomnia as well as sleep apnea or due to jet lag or shift work sleep illness. This is relatively similar to narcolepsy which is the reason besides treating the fundamental cause, a couple of doctors offer Provigil to control its symptoms. Provigil is the known treatment for narcolepsy symptoms. But, there have been countless concerns regarding Provigil side effects and it is still unclear whether this is secure to utilize on patients who are not sick of narcolepsy.

Frequently, sleep sicknesses such as these aren’t detected by the individual himself but by their significant others. And there are some who merely takes sleeping aids if they begin having the symptoms. Some utilize melatonin as a sleep aid because it claims to be a secure alternative to narcotic sleep pills. But like most sleeping aids, there are also bad aftereffects of taking melatonin when used inappropriately. The most effective way of curing a sleep illness is to check on a physician and get a sleep study to describe the exact problem and be provided with the correct cure.

The researchers found that some people who cannot seem to get to sleep have warmer core body temperatures than normal. Their bodies tried to reset their internal thermostats to a more normal temperature. The cooler room helps in decreasing the core body temperature and induces sleepiness. One of the reasons people may snore is because they sleep on their backs with their mouth wide open. Sleeping in this way may result in the body closing off the throat as if one were eating, this is to avoid choking. However, when we sleep on our backs with the mouth open the result is that wonderfully irritating snoring! There are several different ways that you can adjust your sleep in order to overcome jet lag. The first way is simply by starting a week ahead of time and trying to get yourself as close to the new time schedule as you possibly can. If you are stuck on a rigid schedule because of your work, this can be a little bit difficult to do but you can still begin to move yourself in the right direction, even if you are getting some light sleep for a night or two. Once you get off of the plane, you will be able to move into the new time zone more readily and catch up on any sleep debt the first night.Another way that you can adjust your sleep in advance for travel is by reducing the amount of sleep that you are getting at night and napping several times during the day. It is a fact that most people need anywhere from eight to 9 hours of sleep a night in order to truly wake rested. You can deprive yourself of four or five hours per night easily if you’re taking a few cat naps during the day. It is thought that one twenty minute nap is the equivalent of three hours worth of sleep. You can use this to your advantage and adjust your sleep accordingly.Alternative medicine mostly uses herbs, plants, leaves and roots as treatment. Extracts from these are made into compound medications to cure various disorders. Once the cause is cured, a person will automatically stop snoring. The airway obstruction which is causing the snoring may just be a swollen tissue in the end and it can be cured without surgery or any other invasive procedure. The disease is a minor problem and millions of Americans suffer from it.TreatmentsIf you are living alone and you do not have a bed partner who can point out this problem to you, try to notice some symptoms in the morning. Those who have this condition frequently have morning headaches and trouble concentrating. They are also easily irritated and they have swift mood changes. Frequent urination at night is also a sign along with dryness of throat when the person wakes up.Doctors advice the patients to make lifestyle changes before any aggressive methods are done. Having a healthier and more active lifestyle can cure just about any disease, this one included. Avoiding alcohol and cigarettes can also help immensely.Yoga is another way to cure a sleep apnea. Most of the postures and exercises in yoga are meant to regulate breathing patterns. Yoga exercises are very effective in removing the blockages in the nasal passages.
