Your body requires fat and cholesterol to maintain good health. So, be conscious NOT to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Huh? I thought cholesterol was bad for me? It sounds like its good! Why lower it at all? The answer to this question is simple. Having a ‘healthy’ amount of cholesterol is good for you. But as the blood cholesterol levels go above 200 milligrams per deciliter, then there is a much greater chance of heart problems and other health complications. So, you do need to take the neccessary lowering cholesterol steps if you are to maximise your health.

Having raised total blood cholesterol is obviously a risk factor for heart disease. But, many times heart attacks, bypass surgeries, angioplasties, and sudden cardiac deaths occur in people with a total cholesterol level below 200mg/dL. So, what is the answer to this conundrum?

We have to really look at the HDL vs LDL levels separately. In other words, by knowing how much ‘Good’ Cholesterol (HDL) you have as a percentage of the total cholesterol. Statistics can sometimes be deceptive! Instead, you have to make sure you have a grip on the numbers so that lowering cholesterol can become a reality.

Unfortunately, most people aren’t even aware they have atherosclerosis until they have a heart attack or stroke. Because the facts are that you could have your arteries closed up by 80% and yet not have a symptom! (Until the heart attack…) Most people begin to develop cholesterol driven atherosclerosis as children and it’s unusual if you find an adult in the United States who does not have some degree of atherosclerosis.
