Do you suffer from fatigue that makes you so tired every day you can’t even muster up the energy for a short walk? Do you live “in a fog” and eat to help you wake up? Do you eat more when you are tired, thus gaining weight and ultimately becoming depressed? Is your lack of energy spinning your life out of control? You may have Sleep Apnea.

Here are some common signs and symptoms to help you decide if you have this sleep disorder:

* Excessive daytime sleepiness

* Loud snoring

* Restless sleep

* Difficulty with concentration

* Depression

* Morning headaches

* High blood pressure

Often it is the bed partner that notices the periods of apnea. The person suffering from the problem doesn’t even realize they have it.

Sleep apnea occurs when a person stops breathing when they sleep. A diagnosis is made by having an evaluation by a sleep disorders specialist and going to a sleep lab for an overnight sleep study. Some patients have been reported to stop breathing when they sleep up to 100 times per hour.

This disorder currently affects approximately 20 million adults and can contribute to other serious health conditions. If you suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes, heart trouble or are overweight, treating your apnea may improve these conditions as well as make you feel better!

Sleep apnea can be treated easily. The most effective treatment is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). This will help keep your airway from collapsing when you sleep and will eliminate your sleep apnea. It can make a tremendous difference in your life, often after the first night of use.

After being diagnosed with sleep apnea and prescribed a CPAP machine, you can finally have the energy you need to go on walks and become more active. You will have the ability to think clearly and plan healthy meals. Your fatigue will begin to disappear during the day and you will be able to lose weight more easily.

If you have obstructive sleep apnea, there’s a good chance you may have been recommended to try a CPAP machine. This is a mask that attaches to a pump at the bedside that blows gentle, positive air pressure through your nose to keep you from breathing stoppages at night. In general, people have a love and hate relationship with their machines. Some people love them, and some absolutely despise them.

What I’ve noticed over the years is that there are 5 common habits and characteristics the successful CPAP users all share.

1. Their top priority is their health. They are open-minded and willing to try strange looking devices and gadgets. What others may think is irrelevant.

2. They are willing to invest in upgrades and devices that regular insurance doesn’t cover for. Most insurances only cover for the basics, and although most people do fine, some need more sophisticated machines or various other masks.

3. They make sure that they are breathing through their nose well all the time. Either they control nasal congestion with allergy medications or use nasal saline routinely. Some even have to undergo surgery to breathe better.

4. They join live or virtual support groups, sharing, learning, and educating within the collective wisdom of these groups.

5. They constantly monitor the data from their machines to work with the sleep doctor and equipment company, making constant adjustments and fine tuning various settings.

6. They surround themselves with a team of doctors and trusted advisors, collaborating with and troubleshooting any issues that may arise.

7. They don’t rely only on their machines for sleep apnea relief. They incorporate other healthy habits such eating early, eating healthy foods, exercising regularly, and finding ways to de-stress and relax on a regular basis.

As you can see, successful CPAP users don’t rely on their machines alone to solve all their problems. They use it as a tool that helps them accomplish their other health goals more effectively. Some people adjust to immediately, whereas others can literally take months to find significant benefits.

You or someone you know may suffer from a sleep disorder called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This is a breathing disorder during sleep that can have a negative effect on your quality of life when left untreated. The best treatment for OSA is a therapy that utilizes a machine called a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure device (CPAP). This air pressure is delivered to your airway by a mask that covers your nose and sometimes both your nose and mouth. The success of your treatment with CPAP will depend on your ability to find the mask that works best for you. One size does not fit all with CPAP masks.

Several different brands and designs of CPAP masks exist. There are nasal masks that fit over the nose and full face masks that fit over both the nose and the mouth, usually preferred by those who tend to breathe through their mouths when they sleep. Nasal “pillows” are inserted into the nares and provide the least claustrophobic effect. With so many choices here are some things to consider before choosing the mask that is best for you.

Do you have a nasal blockage of any type? If you answer yes, then you will probably be better served to use a full face mask as mentioned in the above section.

Do you naturally breathe through your nose or your mouth? Choosing a mask that fits your needs based on this answer will aid in a more natural transition to CPAP therapy.

Do you breathe through your nose and your mouth? Using a full face mask will allow mixed delivery of air to both your nose and your mouth as your breathing patterns change during the night.

Do you ever feel claustrophobic? If so, a mask that provides a free field of vision may suit you better. Masks with obtrusive interfaces may not work well for you.

Do you scuba dive or snorkel? An oral mask slips into your mouth in a similar manner to what you are used to with a diver’s mouthpiece.

Are you comfortable with the feel of a hat or a cap? Masks with headgear are similar in feel to wearing a hat. They are generally lightweight and comfortable.

Would you prefer the freedom of little or no headgear? If so, a direct nasal or oral mask may work for you the best.

Using CPAP to treat sleep apnea can change your life for the better in so many ways. You will feel rested during the day. Your blood pressure can get under control. You will have energy and a desire to get out and enjoy life again. Your organs will get the oxygen they need while you sleep at night. But to enjoy all of these benefits you must choose the best path to success with your machine. This begins and ends with CPAP masks.

The pause of flow of air intake while sleeping is called as “sleep apnea”. This sleeping disorder makes the patient miss one or two breaths while he is asleep. This cycle continues frequently, making the person wake up completely and thereby disrupting the sleep pattern. Thankfully, with the advancements in medical technology there is a perfect solution for this sleeping problem. The use of “continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) Mask” is the best treatment available today for sleep apnea. These CPAP machines where invented by Professor Colin Sullivan in 1981. The CPAP masks commonly referred as the “breathing machines” helps the people to keep the air passage of the body open, so that they can breathe without any interruption. Though the CPAP mask helps the people to sleep well without disruption, many of them find it very much difficult to adjust to the new sleep regimen. Hence it is very much important to choose the CPAP mask that gives a perfect fit.Understanding the working principle of the CPAP masks will help you to choose the best comfortable machine for overcoming the sleeping problem. The CPAP masks resemble the looks of a ventilator but have a very different working principle. Unlike the ventilators, the CPAP machines open up the air passage by creating a positive pressure. These machines only push the air into the respiratory system during the sleep apnea cycle. I.e. These machines only help during the intake of air and the air exhaust is done by our body itself.Wearing the CPAP masks during sleep can make people feel uncomfortable, especially if the mask is bulky, hard, heavy, and noisy or causes skin irritation. People using the CPAP masks face five main problems such as air leakage, pressure from headgear, limited sleep positions, skin irritation and noise. However, with the advancements in technology, all these 5 difficulties have been overcome. The “Cloth Nasal Mask” is a new product that allows the people to continue their CPAP therapy without experiencing the 5 main problems of the conventional CPAP machines. This is how the Cloth Nasal Mask overcomes the difficulties faced by using the conventional CPAP machines:1. The cloth material inflates like a balloon, hugging the skin and thereby reducing the air leakage2. Very little tension is needed in the headgear because you don’t need to keep tightening to headgear to get a good seal.3. With no rigid buckles, clips or faceplates you can sleep in any position of your preference.4. As a non-allergic cloth is used, there are reduced chances for skin irritation5. These cloth masks make use of exhalation holes instead of an exhaust valve so only negligible level of noise is produced. CPAP therapy will be effective only if continue with it, which you will do only if you feel comfortable with the mask used. Hence it is always good to choose the “Cloth Nasal Mask” that eliminates the 5 main factors that causes discomfort.

CPAP is an acronym that stands for continuous positive airway pressure. It is a form of therapy used for people who have obstructive sleep apnea. Sometimes the continuous pressure of CPAP is uncomfortable for the person using it. If that happens, BIPAP may be an alternative.

Though BIPAP therapy is similar to CPAP and will get the same results for the sufferer using it, it does have some differences. CPAP therapy gives one constant pressure for both inhalation and exhalation when breathing. BIPAP has two settings, instead of a constant one. When a person breathes in the pressure is higher and when they exhale, it is lower.

Some patients have difficulty with the pressure of CPAP, especially when exhaling, so BIPAP can be a solution for that.

Another difference between BIPAP and CPAP is that BIPAP is used to treat more than just obstructive sleep apnea. Some BIPAP machines can be set to give a person a breath. This would be used with central sleep apnea or complex sleep apnea, when the patient is having apneas because the brain signal does not make it to the chest muscles properly.

It is also a good device for a person with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). People with COPD have low oxygen levels during the night when they sleep. Their lungs are stressed. A BIPAP unit can help them to breathe more comfortably, while also sustaining their oxygen levels at a normal percentage.

Some of the new BIPAP machines have a feature called Biflex. This is a comfort setting which provides a smoother transition from the end of inspiration to the beginning of expiration.

Complications from BIPAP are similar to those of CPAP. There may be mask discomfort. It is crucial to find the best fitting mask or sores may develop at certain pressure points on the mask.

Bloating from swallowing air can be another complication, but does not happen very often.

Your doctor can help decide which form of PAP therapy will be best for you by taking your history and the results of your tests into consideration.

If you think you may have sleep apnea, you can avoid long term complications by seeking out a sleep disorders physician and being tested. The sooner you start your therapy for sleep apnea, the less likely you will be to develop other health problems associated with it.

During normal breathing, air passes through the throat on its way to the lungs. The air travels past the soft palate, uvula, tonsils, and tongue. When a person is awake, the muscles in the back of the throat tighten to hold these structures in place preventing them from collapsing into the airway. During sleep, these structures can fall into the airway causing snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is characterized by loud snroing and distrubed or interruped sleep patterns. Sleep apnea can have serious consequences including cardiac problems. Frequently patients will awaken in the morning with a headache. If they become sleep deprived they may feel sleeppy all day, and may fall asleep while driving in the car.

Sleep apnea is diagnosed by a sleep study. During a sleep study, the patient’s breathing patterns, heart rhythim and brain waves are monitored.

If it is found that sleep apnea is present, most doctors recommend the use of CPAP. CPAP is a breathing device worn during sleep to help keep the airway open. In some situations surgery is recommended. The uvulopalatopharyngoplasty with or without tonsillectomy are surgical procedurs designed to open the airway. In rare situations, a tracheostomy is necessary. These are procedures designed to circumvent this sleep related collapse of these structures.

Large tonsils, or hypertrophic tonsils, can frequently cause severe snoring, breathing holding, difficulty eating, choaking, and sleep apnea. This can occur as an isolated event or in conjunction with recurrent tonsillitis. If the problem becomes severe, tonsillectomy with adenoidectomy is often recommended.For more information visit: http://www.melatrol.com/?aid=640369

Millions of people across the world are suffering from Sleep disorder and Sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation is the condition in which patient cannot experience a healthy sleep. Sleep disorders are considered to be one of the most severe disorders as they lead to many other ailments related to sleep disorder. Sleep Deprivation includes a host of symptoms such as headache, lack of concentration, mood swings, sleep apnea, irritability, drowsiness and snoring. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) and memory foam mattress are the most effective treatments for treating the symptoms of sleep deprivation. Nowadays CPAP is considered to be the best solution for the treatment of sleep apnea. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure is used for treating sleep deprivation mainly caused by the breathing problems of sleep apnea. While sleeping, the breathing problem is caused by obstructions of air passage. CPAP is based and designed in such a manner to provide essential compressed air with adequate air pressure inducing normal respiration. In CPAP treatment, there is a mechanical device that is the main part to control the air pressure. CPAP uses a special machine to provide air pressure to the patient by a special mask. The air pressure is usually set up by the sleep technician. Sleep technician programs the particular air supply, called titrated pressure value in the machine that delivers air every night. The correct air pressure removes the incidents of apnea or snoring. While lying on the bed, the mask is put on the face and air path is directed straight into the nostrils. With the continuous flow of air pressure, one is able to sleep well. In automatic CPAP machines, the sleep technician has to just choose the value of the recommended pressure already recorded in it. Mostly, in some CPAP machines, some models are humidifiers integrated to avoid the dryness of the compressed air. Along with CPAP, memory foam mattress is also considered as a successful treatment for treating sleep deprivation. Sleep disorders such as Sleep apnea and sleep deprivation can cause serious implications. In some cases if not treated properly can cause death. CPAP and memory foam mattress are effective ways in treating sleep apnea or snoring.

All too often we get complacent about the things we use every day. We assume the car will start, water will pour from the kitchen faucet, and the sun will rise again tomorrow morning. For the most part, the things in life we take for granted rarely let us down. We have established safeguards to help us out in such unwanted situations. For example, we have a spare tire in our car, just in case. That spare tire may never be used, and it is no mistake that one comes with every new vehicle purchased. Being stranded alone, in the middle of the night with a flat tire can be a horrific experience. Imagine being in that situation and discovering that the spare was missing. The uncomfortable pit deep in the abdomen will be followed by panic, stress, fear, and anger. Finding the solution to that problem could take hours, days or weeks. The time spent stranded mimics being incarcerated in a prison cell; there is no easy way out of this situation.

The same thing happens to a sleep apnea patient when suddenly their CPAP machine stops working. (CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Air Pressure, a device used to open the airway during sleep) …or the discovery that the mask had been devoured by the new four-legged house guest. These are not things that only happen to “the other guy”. These are real situations that happen daily. For some reason, it seems to happen late on a Friday, one that is followed by a long holiday weekend. A sleepless four to six day sentence has just been handed down from an angry warden. Sadly, in the event of a mechanical failure, it often takes three or four weeks to have the machine repaired by the manufacturer. For those people (like me) that are absolutely dependent on this device to be able to breathe during sleep, having a back up is a lot more than just a “good idea”, it is an absolute necessity. Having been in that terrible situation on more than one occasion, I have learned to have a back up machine and mask stowed away in the trunk of my car, and to have a back up system at home. Luckily for me, I also have a store with stacks CPAP machines and masks sitting there for me to use if needed. For everyone else, the sleep they knew is gone, followed by gasping, choking, headaches, irritability, and missed work. That important presentation you were going to give tomorrow has just blown up in your face, or at least that is what your face will look like after hours of laying there tossing and turning while trying to choke down another breath.

All too often we hear the desperation in the voices from people who call in and wonder how fast they can remedy this problem. “What, you don’t have a loaner machine near me here in Rock Springs Wyoming?” “What am I going to do?” “How long will it take to get this fixed?” These are questions we hear on a regular basis. The only viable solution to this problem is to be prepared, in advance. By this we do not mean you should get one later, it means you should get one right away. Many who are stranded, were “about” to get a back up, or knew they needed one. It is imperative that everyone who relies on a medical device have some kind of back up plan. For the diabetic, having an extra glucose monitor on hand, even an old one, would be like finding a winning lottery ticket if they were having an attack and needed to know how much insulin to inject.

Finding a backup CPAP system can be as easy as going online, ordering, and having it arrive in a few days right to your front door. You could get a used one out of your local newspaper, but it would probably be at a different setting than yours, and is probably full of cat hair, nasal mucous, and who knows what else. We don’t spend a lot of time imagining what is on other people’s night stands… Too often, the reason the CPAP machine is being sold is because it has problems, making noise, or is about to fail. We are still trying to find out why people describe them as only used a few nights, when in reality the machine has thousands of hours on it. How many times has it been tossed around the airport? How long will it last? What is that smell? These are all important questions to think about. Some people think they don’t have the means to get a new machine. Affordability is no longer such an issue. Most people do not know that the price of a CPAP machine has fallen drastically in the last ten years. Many people expect to pay $1200 for a new one, since that is what they paid for the first one they got back in the late ‘80s. Even five years ago, the cost was over $500 for a basic CPAP. Great news folks; the price for a brand new machine is only about $200. Such websites as www.YouNeedSleep.com have some of the lowest prices in the world for sleep apnea equipment. With new machines for around $200, and new nasal mask systems starting at only $40, put forth the effort to get a new system. Even if a person buys the cheapest system available, it only takes one dead machine to appreciate the investment. How much is sleep worth to you? How do you feel if you stay up late one night? How do you feel the next day? Think about not sleeping for days, or even weeks… What would you pay to avoid losing three or four weeks of sleep? Sleep is the foundation of good health and the way a person lives and feels. Spending a couple of hundred dollars for a back up CPAP machine is an investment in a healthy lifestyle, probably just as important as eating right, exercising, and getting regular check-ups. Take that old mask, clean it, and put it away for day when you will appreciate going to bed, instead of admitting yourself into the emergency room just to use their ventilator to get some sleep…

When a person suffers from sleep deprivation, it is certain that their waking state will be affected. The disappointing fact about sleep disorders is that most people have suffered from it at least at one point in their lives. Though there are sleep disorders that are transient, some are actually stricken with the affliction for years, and even decades. Insomnia, for one, affects a considerable percentage of the world’s population. Ten to fifteen percent of the population has severe chronic insomnia, while another twenty-five to thirty percent has occasional or transient insomnia. However, insomnia is just one kind of sleep disorder that causes sleep deprivation. There is sleep apnea, which is characterized by the breathing pauses in a person’s sleeping state. Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome (DSPS), on the other hand, is characterized by a person’s inability to wake up or fall asleep at his or her desired times.

Sleep deprivation, due to several sleep disorders, causes sleepiness, anxiety, restlessness, fatigue, disorientation when the person is awake. Many people have opted to use medications to help them with their affliction, and others have relied on natural remedies (lemon balm, kava, chamomile, oats, drinking warm milk, etc.) or methods (adjusting sleeping time, refurbishing their sleeping environment, exercise, etc.). Though there are some treatments that are left to be desired for their side effects (and yes, even some herbal remedies can have adverse side effects), there is a machine invented to treat sleep deprivation.

Treating sleep deprivation with CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) can work to relieve someone from their sleeplessness. Through a method of ventilating the respiratory system, this machine is usually used to treat people who suffer from sleep apnea or hypnoapnea. It can also help a person’s snoring problem. Treating sleep deprivation with CPAP does have its limitation. For example, when it comes to sleep apnea, CPAP can only treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA is characterized by the constriction of the airways, but CPAP cannot treat central sleep apnea, which is caused by the break of communication between the brain and the body’s breathing pace.

A CPAP machine works by feeding pressurized air to the person through a mask. The machine keeps the airflow at a certain pressure, and this prevents the airways from getting constricted. A CPAP is not usually operated by the patients themselves. A professional generally manages the machine, and people have to go to a clinic (like a sleep clinic) to get this treatment. The pressure is adjusted according to how it eliminates apneas or snoring.

People who have tried this treatment may experience some discomfort in the beginning, especially when subjected to a mask (which normally has hoses for the nose, and such). Some struggle to get used to the machine. On the other hand, most were able to adjust to this method. Moreover, when administered by a trained technician, treating sleep deprivation with CPAP does not have any side effects, unlike other sleep disorder mediations or herbal remedies. It can be a bit costly, though. Yet it is also advisable for people to try this method and see if it works well for their sleeping disorders.

With researchers and doctors coming across to different types of sleep disorders every now or then, Sleep Apnea is another common form adding to their worries. This particular type of sleep disorder is characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep. Each breathe lasts long enough that one or more breath are missed each time. This habit of improper breathing is diagnosed by an overnight sleep test called polysomnogram.

Doctors describe the clinically significant levels of sleep apnea in five or more episodes per hour. As far as studies are concerned, three distinct forms of sleep apnea have been found. These include: central, obstructive and complex apnea. Each form of disorder emerges due to different reasons. Breathing is interrupted by lack of respiratory effort in case of central sleep apnea. Whereas, breathing faces a physical block of air flow in obstructive apnea. There is a transition from central to obstructive features during different events in complex sleep apnea.

Symptoms of this particular kind of problem may be present in an individual for years without any sort of identification. Sufferer might feel day time sleepiness and fatigue because of the problem.

Researchers have come out with effective treatments for the common apnea disorder. Use of a continuous positive airway pressure device during sleep pressurizes the air flow into the throat. Apart from this, in severe cases NIPPY machines are also used to provide treatment to the patient.

With the belief of thousands in using the natural way to prevent the sleep apnea problem, different positions of sleeping are also invented that will lesser the chances of getting affected. One of the most common problem is sleeping in lateral position that is beneficial for people suffering from central sleep apnea.

Another common practice is learning and applying didgeridoo that reduces the snoring, sleep apnea and daytime sleepiness problem. As far as health is concerned, many people have become aware of these common sleep disorders that might land up in troubling a lot. Different physical exercises are made to relieve the sufferers and let the lead a healthy life.
